The New Seasons, a colorful score darker than many of Proto's compositions, features extreme virtuosity in the tuba and, in the second movement, a solo cello accompanied by an improvising jazz bassist. The solo percussionists are also kept quite busy in a variey of styles, with rapidly changing moods, creating a kaleidoscopic and rhapsodic effect.
